World Malaria Day: Why It Matters

World Malaria Day, observed annually on April 25, highlights the ongoing battle against malaria, a deadly disease transmitted by mosquitoes. Even with much progress, there is more to be done as malaria continues to impact millions worldwide, particularly in developing countries.

THE FACTS ABOUT MALARIA

• Each year, over 200 million people contract malaria, and an estimated 435,000 needlessly die from this preventable, treatable disease...

• Over 60% of these deaths are children under five years old, making malaria one of the leading causes of child mortality in Africa.

CHARITIES WE RECOMMEND 

Against Malaria Foundation (AMF)

AMF works to prevent the spread of malaria by distributing long-lasting, insecticide-treated mosquito nets to susceptible populations in poor countries.

• AMF’s Demonstrated Impact: Every year, AMF: distributes roughly 36.5 million mosquito nets, enough to protect 66 million people. The impact of these nets is estimated to be 24,300 deaths averted, 12 to 24 million malaria cases prevented, and US$880 million in improved economic performance.

Malaria Consortium

Malaria Consortium delivers programs that protect the poorest and most marginalized children in Africa and Asia from a range of deadly diseases, including malaria and pneumonia. The Seasonal Malaria Chemoprevention (SMC) project is an extremely cost-effective and evidence-based approach to protect children under 5 from malaria. 

• Malaria Consortium’s  Demonstrated Impact: In 2023, Malaria Consortium delivered seasonal malaria chemoprevention to 24 million children, up from 20 million in 2022.
